Race History

The Doylestown Duathlon was started in 2009 by Johnny King-Marino.
The event was a throw back to the golden age of Duathlon back in the 80's and 90's when stand alone duathlons would draw one thousand or more participants. While most Duathlons these days are the "ugly step sister" of larger triathlons, a mere nuisance event or extra revenue producer held in conjunction with a larger triathlon this duathlon was to be a premier show case even event. The event would be held early in the multisport season to capitalize on the needs of the triathlete to test their conditioning before the waters were warm enough to swim. Triathletes and Duathletes racing together oh my! |

We certainly got the climate part right! Our first year a torrential down pour and temperatures in the 40's chilled nearly three hundred athletes. A hearty bunch dined on tomato pie and Caesar salad and listened to great tunes while avoiding hypothermia.
2010 the numbers swelled to nearly four hundred as duathletes braved high winds and unseasonably cool early spring conditions. Are start studded field , a virtual who's who of multisport raced that day and nearly 50 first timers brought up the year. Pasta and loads of goodies were served. The music blasted and a great time was had by all. The Tent and potable heaters sure came in handy!

2011 was the year or big changes: A new safer faster bike and run course as well as a bigger user friendly transition area was created. Chip Homier and Jack Blumenstock joined Johnny King-Marino as race directors. Due to road conditions the race was postpone and moved to May. Despite all of theses obstacles the event went off with out a hitch and feedback on the race changes was very positive. |
